Modle Oerder

Oerder does not consider faces when receiving death reports. He has to worry about keeping the command staff at a functional number. The latest batch of field reports reveal the campaign has lost several officers to animal attacks. There are replacements waiting on the ships, but the pass cave in has blocked that option.

He paces around the command center while his general staff and office aides look on. He is normally a self-controlled, focused man, but the recent losses are rattling his calm.

“What about the ridge reports?” Oerder asks. “Do we have those?”

“Yes, sir, the intel just came in,” Trísten says and then reads from the pages in his hand.

“A group of rams are holding both peaks. There has to be a way to the top of each,” Trísten reads.

Oerder lays his hand on a topographic map of the region. The map shows details about the surrounding mountains, but the peaks remain a mystery. He looks down at the map, the mountain pass winding through an uncharted area marked as Peak G0. and Peak G1.

“Gentlemen, we need to take the high ground.

“On which side, General?” Modle asks.

“We’ll hit them on both sides,” Oerder says, and moves his hands together like a lobster claw, demonstrating the classic pincer move.

He looks at Trísten.

“Corporal, are these maps current?” Oerder asks.

“Yes, general,” Trísten replies. “We still have several areas to chart, but we think we have charted the trails the rams take to get on top of each peak.”

Oerder looks at the map again, uncertain what it shows.

“Outstanding, now walk us through it,” Oerder says.

“Yes, sir,” Major Model pipes up. “Basically, we are looking at the sheer cliffs on either side of the pass.”

The Major points at the map and draws access routes with his finger.

“We are climbing this route,” Modle says. “The men can hike most of the terrain, but the top section is about a sixty-meter climb up a sheer rock wall.”

“When are you planning to start this?” Oerder asks.

“I have a climbing team on the wall as we speak,” Modle says. “They are setting anchors for rope ladders.”

“Excellent,” Oerder says. “Give me an update when you team reaches the peak.”

“Will do,” Modle replies.

Oerder looks at the map and point to the cliff face across the pass.

“What are our options for the other side?” he asks.

“The norther side has more sheer cliff. We don’t think the rams climb up,” Modle says. “Although we have found a few narrow sections that we suspect they jump across.”

Modle points to marks on the map and continues, “I have already spoken with the construction chief. He said there are a few locations where they could install rope bridges.”

“Is it doable?” Oerder asks.

“If they have a couple of weeks, sure,” Modle says. “Frankly, I don’t know how the rams cross some of those gaps. They must have wings to make the leaps they do.”

“Thank you, major. Thoughts, gentlemen?” Oerder asks.

He looks around the room and a captain speaks up.

“If you commit men to both sites, the ram would also have to divide their forces to watch us,” the captain says.
